Responsibilities:
- Delivers forecasts to television and social media viewers, radio listeners and public appearances.
- Prepares weather forecasts based on data such as temperatures, humidity, air pressure, and wind velocity provided by weather satellites, radar, recording instruments, and observers across the country and world.
- Compares data with previous weather patterns and evaluates probabilities for future weather conditions.
- Prepares visual aids and maps to be used in forecasts presented on television and on social media.
- Attempts to forecast, as accurately as possible, the timing, severity, and exact location of dangerous weather systems such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and severe rain storms.
- Relies on prior experience to determine appropriate means of notifying public of potentially dangerous weather systems.
- Prepares forecasts for specific industries, such as aviation, marine, and agriculture.
- Member of the AMS.
- CBM or CBM eligible.
- Prior experience with tropical weather is a plus.
- Our meteorological staff will guide you and teach you if needed.
- Extensive knowledge of meteorology and forecasting future weather events.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present forecasts in multiple platforms, such as television, radio, and social media.
- Attend community outreach events.
- Ability to deliver concise, understandable, and accurate forecasts.
- Excellent supervisory skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Mastery in meteorological computer systems.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Expertise in social media strategy, including platform-specific audience growth, engagement tactics, analytics interpretation, and best-practices.
- Ability to develop and execute long-term digital and social growth strategies based on data trends and audience insights.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively across news, weather, promotions teams.
- Ability to appear on-air or in live digital hits as needed, providing breaking news updates, explainers, or social/digital coverage context.
- Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology required.
- Three years of experience on a forecasting team.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
- Able to work efficiently under pressure and long hours during a weather emergency.
